Rambaigal Heartil Ringtone Remo

For a change, I thought of posting something that amuses me rather than worry or ponder seriously. Pasted below, courtesy www.geetham.net, is the lyrics for the song "Kaadhal Yaanai" from the upcoming Shankar movie, " Anniyan" starring Vikram with music by Harris Jayaraj.

While this could easily become a serious discussion topic later, at this stage I want this to be enjoyed by all readers. I have listened to the song many times and everytime the lyrics crack me up. I admit to liking the song for its quirky lyrics. I don't approve of english words in tamil songs but I have to give it to whoever wrote this one for the sheer inventiveness he brings to his words. I expect this song to be picturised well by Shankar and is upbeat enough to become very popular. You can listen to the song here. Another version of the lyrics is available here.

Thanks for the Lyrics. Wonder how you did it?

I like the song too.! I won't blame the guy who wrote it..!! That's what the people want and the producer wants. Show me the money.!!!

Almost all the songs in Anniyan are superb. But, I miss A.R.Rehman. Hope, Shankar gets the image that he lost by Boys... :-)

Heard the song so many times... but never got the lyrics properly.. thanks for posting it.

btw, isn't it Vairamuthu who penned the lyrics for all the songs in Anniyan?

There was a time when such songs (with English words aplenty) could be instantly identified with Vaali. Guess Vairamuthu has also been bending to demand. Best verse without doubt is "Rambaigal heartil ringtone Remo"! Must accept the innovation and imagination in this song. Btw, it is "pookkal vedikkinra Sten gun Remo" :)

I wouldnt be surprised in this song had been written in a jiffy in some beach or something.

Narayanan
I didnt do it. Geetham.net did it. I couldnt decipher a few words myself.

Ranj
Its an addictive tune with very addictive lyrics.

I am not sure if I will classify it as superb but they sure are hummable. I am expecting a movie along the lines of Gentleman and Mudhalvan.

Chakra
The lyrics hit you in your face. My wife and I laugh everytime we listen to it. The lyrics is indeed by Vairamuthu.

Gandalf
Its a market driven industry and I guess this is the kind of music and lyrics people want. That said, thanks for the correction. I wondered about it myself.

The lyrics for Anniyan hv been penned by Vairamuthu, Na Muthukumar and Kabilan (Nokia Nokia). Not sure whether Vairamuthu has written the lyrics for Remo Remo song.

like most others i didnt get a chance to listen to Anniyan songs. was thinking what would be the reason. It was not like I stopped listening to tamil songs altogether.

Finally i figured out that I could no longer stomach tamil songs feigned as ultra cool- like the bunch of comedy lines in this movie.

If the songs are without any pretensions and honest (in that sense, they don’t pretend to be hip) then I can listen to them. For example “tamilnatil ellarukum” from mayavi. It says yeah, I am a kuthu song and that’s what I am. This I can take, but not the “mental diarrhea“ (phrase courtesy- one of the rediff bloggers) of writers like Vairamuthu.

I like this osng too. Mere co incidence is I am listening to this song and I am reading ur blog as well :). Music is jazzy and for this sort of music, u need to hav such lyric.
But I can't resist saying it resemble, Diana King's la la lies.

Kaps
Couldnt say it without looking at the CD or tape. I hear from people that its Vairamuthu.

Jagan
The Nokia song is worse because the words are not pronounced properly. Not that they make sense anyways.

As I noted in my post, there is a whole axe to grind here with the quality of music and lyrics or what passes for it in Tamil/Indian films today. It definitely makes for a future post along serious lines. That said, I put up this post just to show how far the lyricist really stretched his imagination or lack of it thereof.

Reflex
True. The song has got very peppy music and I listen to it often.

"Finally i figured out that I could no longer stomach tamil songs feigned as ultra cool- like the bunch of comedy lines in this movie. "

Hellboy ... seriously man ... thats very well put! I have the exact same opinion when I see in some recent movies what they THINK to be very cool and trendy and IMO they look like nothing but idiotic clowns. Sad thing is many people in India do not even realize that these are NOT cool.

I do not want to sound like some current Tamil fanatics who blindly oppose any English word but same time I guess it is justifiable for us to expect some sensible lyrics(even if in pure Tamil and which can still be made trendy) as against senseless garble being spewed out nowadays.

I will not even take the easier route of "this is what the people enjoy and so this is why writers are giving such lyrics". I think lyricists have become lazy asses and they are taking the easier route of going down a beaten path of coming up with garble that sells to people as against being innovative and coming up with quality lyrics that can still be trendy. But ofcourse for this, they have to spend time and put their depleted grey cells to use and sadly few people want to do that nowadays.

Sorry if I sound strong, but IMO Tamil/Indian movies have become clownish/ridiculous/despicable in the name of being trendy. Majority of the people in India do not even realize this and continue to believe that the Tamil/Hindi/Indian movies they see are trendy.

This especially hurts more when we think of the huge talent pool we have. Once in a while we have extremely good quality movies(flash in the pans?) but such movies are increasingly becoming exceptions as against the norms.

Yeah arun, your fourth paragraph sums it up all. Hopefully opinions like ours gain enough mass and travel across the oceans and drive some sense to our directors. My beef is when directors like shankar, who I thought will take the tamil audiences to the next level, pander to these type of tactics just to make sure he does well at the box office.

Then again I may sound harsh like you, but couldn’t keep it to myself and hence the rant.

See ranga, what I have done to your post. Even after you clearly mentioning that this is only for fun and asking us to save the serious discussion for a later date, I went ahead and started this. I do it all the time, don’t i?

pradeep said...

"Yaakkai thiri..." from AE has 'authentic tamil' lyrics and sounds trendy too. Thats a good potion.

Somethings cannot and should not be imposed. It will violate one's primary rights. They need to come with maturity, something many film makers havent reached.

Arun and Hellboy
Very interesting discussion. I will have to think and type a response. Give me a little time.
Hellboy
Without anyswering your other points, I think its nice that you write what you feel like. The reason I wanted to keep the tone light here, is just to accomodate a serious post on the same topic in the very near future. Thats all. Your writing something in any tone does not make a difference to things in any way. I respect your opinion and please feel free to write what you feel like and not what you think is imposed on you.

Arun and Hellboy
Ill keep this short and hopefully carry over this conversation to a more serious post in the near future.
Indian cinema is 80% trend driven and 20% star driven. The trend right now is to have lyrics that make no sense whatsoever and people who think they sound cool by uttering them in an Anglicized way. Unfortunately, a frog knows only as much as the depth of the well and no more. We either copy from abroad or copy within the industry whereby originality is never considered as a serious option.
Tamil, an excellent language has been one of the biggest casualties in this war between originality and whats passes off as cool. Its a pity people dont realise the quagmire they are getting into.

though i don't understand most of it, the lyrics appear funny. We have had many hindi songs with english lyrics thrown in but what appeals to me is strong and meaningful hindi lyrics! Byways, i guess saranyan also wrote something related to this movie

Anonymous said...

yeah ranga,
you are right, 80% of the movie is trend driven. The problem arises when trend setters like shankar stop raising their level and try to pass on substandard material as the latest trend.

pradeep is correct, yakkai thriri has got a really good lyrics. mani(ratnam) for one has never compromised the quality of the songs and always tried to raise the standard. Unfortunatley, for every soaring eagle like ratnam, we have hundreds of frogs that refuse to get out of their wells.

What about people like me who cant stand the pure "Ennavalae" or the crass "Pettai Rap"? I prefer to sit and listen to "Kadhalikkum Pennin Kaigal" than those 2..
Where does that leave me??

Very true. Someday I hope to write in earnest about that plague.

Harish
There is always something for everybody in tfm. How much is the only problem?

Hellboy
Even with Mani, sometimes ARR experiments singers like Adnan or someone whose pronounciation screws up the song. There is not one problem here but a multitude of them to be solved.

Off topic: Came across this today. was heart wrenching. i couldn't imagine how such a thing can happen in this time and age. didn't anyone step up and say "come on now, what we are doing doesn't make any sense, does it?". its moments like this that i lose confidence in human nature.
Thought I could share this here.
